What Mine Spec Requires

What gets fitted to a mine spec vehicle?

Mine spec is not a vehicle model, it is a fitout applied to a standard 4x4 so the vehicle can pass site access. A typical build covers the following.

Bullbar and driving lights

Animal strike protection and useable light on unlit haul and access roads.

ROPS (rollover protection)

Protects occupants if the vehicle rolls, which is why it is close to universal on surface sites.

Amber rotating beacon

Makes a light vehicle visible to heavy plant operators whose sightlines are poor by design.

UHF radio

Site channel communication, positional calls and traffic management.

High-visibility reflective striping

Keeps the vehicle visible at night, in dust and under lights.

Wheel chocks

Required whenever the vehicle is parked on site, and checked more often than people expect.

Fire extinguisher and first-aid kit

Serviced and in date, because an expired tag fails an inspection the same way a missing unit does.

Battery isolator

Lets the electrical system be isolated for parking, maintenance and emergency response.

Does every site ask for the same thing?

No, and this is the part that catches people out. The list above is the common core, but each site sets its own access standard, and the differences are real rather than cosmetic. One site wants particular striping, another wants extra lighting or a specific beacon position, another has rules about how gear is stowed or what has to be labelled. Underground work changes the list again, and Queensland sites operating under Safety Together have their own expectations on top.

Buying a vehicle that is mine spec in general is not the same as having one that is compliant for the site it is going to. We fit each vehicle to the access standard of your site, which is why the first question we ask is where it is going rather than what model you want.

What actually happens at induction?

The vehicle gets inspected against the site standard before it is allowed to work, and it either passes or it sits. Missing kit is the obvious failure, but the quieter one is paperwork and dates, an extinguisher out of test, a service that is not evidenced, a registration that lapses mid-hire. Any of those stops a vehicle just as effectively as a missing beacon.

That is the practical argument for hiring vehicles already built for site rather than fitting out ex-showroom stock yourself. A vehicle that arrives wrong costs you the fitout, the travel and the days the crew spends without it, and remote sites turn a small gap into a long trip. What are mine spec vehicle requirements in Queensland?

Queensland resource sites commonly ask for the standard kit list above, and a number of the vehicles in our fleet also carry the Queensland Safety Together specification. What that does not mean is a single statewide build. Every operator publishes its own access standard and applies it to its own sites, so two Queensland projects an hour apart can want different striping, different lighting or different stowage on an otherwise identical ute.

We fit each vehicle to the specific site it is going to rather than to a generic Queensland build, which is set out on our mine spec fitouts page. Sites in Western Australia and New South Wales follow the same pattern, a familiar common core with each operator adding its own standard on top.
